On May 21, 2012 science teacher ,Craig Hohenberger, discovered that a Barn Owl had returned to one of our owl boxes and is successfully caring for three owlets! The owl boxes were installed as a strategy to attract owls to the property to help naturally control the burgeoning rodent population. Each day an adult owl eats 2-3 rodents and their offspring can easily eat 1 each! Owl boxes are easy to build and are an excellent way to control grophers and field mice. Click here to download a step-by-step guide to building and installing your own owl box.

In the last few weeks, we have made huge strides in completing some of last the finishing touches on the green building project.
With the help of several local contractors, our 4,500 gallon rainwater catchment tanks are connected (and activley collecting rainwater from the roof!), the construction access road through the grassland has been tilled and re-seeded with a blend of California Native Grasses and a beautiful swale has been created on the north side of the building to absorb additional runoff.
A big THANK YOU to these helping hands:
Rainwater Catchment: Garden Solutions Landscaping
Grassland Restoration & Swale Design: Habitat Gardens
Tractor Work: Ed Sigourney

As part of the winter block scheduling programming, students from the 7th Grade science classes at Carmel Middle School participated in a native plant restoration activity at the lagoon at Carmel River State Beach.
The long awaited Green Building is now under construction.

For the second year the Carmel Middle School is named an Ocean Guardian School. This designation is based on the commitment by the students and faculty to protect and conserve the Carmel River Watershed and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. As a result of this award, over the next year the students and faculty will be implementing a multi-facted campaign to Green the CMS campus. The primary goals of this campaign are to : REDUCE WATER USE, NO MORE WASTE, JUST SAY NO TO PLASTICS . To achieve these goals students will be implementing a campus wide composting program, reduce and eventually eliminate the use of single use plastics, and will work on restoring native plants in and around the campus.
The Ocean Guardian School program is of NOAA and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. To learn more about this program or how your school can apply please visit the Ocean Guardian Website.
